First review for A Fine Pursuit and A Word or Two from Me

Today my fifth novel went up on Amazon. Click on the cover below to be redirected to the Amazon site of your country!

The review is as follows and kind of blew me away, as you may expect…

An exciting, deep, relationship to scratch your nails down. Having received an Advance Review Copy of this book, I made sure that I got stuck in as soon as possible. I had never read an erotic story before this, though I had a good idea as to what to expect. However, I was very surprised.

With or without the erotica in this book, the multiple dimensions of this read bring me to the conclusion that this is not about sex. This is about a relationship. It is a book about two people, who have both had damaged pasts, getting together and trying their hardest to make it work. It is a book of psychological entanglement, though whereas the main character, Charlotte, has dealt with most of her issues, the male lead has yet to face his daemons fully.

Noah reminded me much of myself, a mind left in a state of confusion and barriers. His love for Charlotte is so strong that he feels he must attack the haunts of his mind to free himself to love her as she deserves to be loved. It was a personable experience, one that you can get entrenched in easily. You can see these struggles behind closed doors, if you peek through the keyholes. Two people who are mad for each other, but repel like opposing magnets when they get too close. Annihilation.

This story is about the damage control of that annihilation, and throughout there are graphic sexual scenes, to be sure, but written in a way that you accept as being ‘their thing’. It is not the theme of the book, nor is it trying to force itself upon you. You are looking through the window of a truly complex relationship that is slowly blossoming, but is–and has been in the past–fuelled by pure animal, sexual prowess. Two strong and sexually strong personalities colliding, while between them the creation of a family unit, baby included.

I was taken totally by the amount of research that has gone into the making of this book, the actions and reactions to some of the most potent psychological explorations and traumas of the human mind. It deserves the five stars and more, and it is certainly a recommended read.

More profound than 50 shades of any colour you like.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

To clarify…

A few people have asked me whether Charlotte’s story is done with at the end of A Fine Profession. My answers have been vague and there is a reason. But I think I should clarify…

A Fine Pursuit is going to very much feature her, even though it is from Noah’s perspective. At the end of Book One, we are left with some BIG questions. We know she left him, we know that from the very beginning of Book One. There is something Charlotte never expected Noah would do and in A Fine Pursuit, he does it. He books himself in for therapy.

Book Two is very heavy on the psychology. It is with this in mind, I should warn you now that I have decided not to list this as an erotic novel. There are plenty of sex scenes still, there always are in any books of mine, but this is a book which you might need to prepare yourselves for. This is much less a sex book than A Fine Profession. The romancer in Noah has made this very much a story of one man’s dreadful past and the woman who forces him to not only face it, but embrace it and hopefully… move on. Sex becomes a sideline of the enormous emotional connection they grow to share.

So to warn you, this is a CONTINUATION of the couple’s story, and not just Noah’s version of Book One. The story continues. It is ongoing. There will be scenes featuring Noah’s interpretation of some parts of Book One, but I’ve only weaved the important elements fundamental to his therapy and the condition he suffers.

Whether the Chambermaid and her lover get their happy ever after, you will just have to read to find out…

At present, I am feeling excited, nervous, tired, impatient, annoyed, happy, sad, oh… and more… The research for these books has been integral and whether I meant to or not, I think I pulled something out of the bag that nobody will expect. I have made huge sacrifices to write these books but I loved every minute. Thought every hardship worth it. Watch this space…

My review of The Assassin Princess by Blake Rivers

I wouldn’t normally read fantasy though I have watched plenty of films in this genre. The first half of the book set the scene; a new world different to anything else I have been presented with before. I found myself wanting to read carefully to absorb all the powerful imagery. The worlds painted were colourful and dangerous; real and yet ethereal. The layers offered an edge of mystery and intrigue. You never knew what might happen next. There was poetry and threat. It was a world of innocence and experience. I was reminded of so many different literary influences and also epic scenes akin to those you may find in Japanese cinema, both anime or otherwise. The book cover gives you a great sense of this also.

Towards the latter half of the book, when the action ramped up, there were breathless moments. There were scenes that drew a disturbed reaction from me. There was splicing between worlds and layers and voices and it was done to move the action rapidly onwards. Even when you get to the epilogue, you yearn for the return of Ami’s innocence, though you know she can never go back. The connection she has with Hero is genuine, heartfelt and never overdone. It was refreshing to read a book where a lot is left to the imagination and you can see the scenes but also draw your own interpretations. It is a living, breathing book. I think there is much yet to be drawn from these characters and this book gave me a sense of that, so I look forward to seeing what might happen next!

Meet the milliner, the dressmaker, the carpenter and the militant…

The milliner had been given only two hours to deal with her target. She had arranged it so that he would come to her. It was imperative she got in, and got out. She couldn’t risk her identity. As far as the authorities knew, she wasn’t even in the country, so being caught would spell certain catastrophe for not only her – but the cause too.

She was dressed casually, and with her hair pulled back into a tight bun, she looked just like any other library frequenter – except for the black ballet pumps laced firmly around her ankles – easier to perform in. No-one would presume that she was one of the deadliest creatures on the planet.

She sat at the end of a long, wide, wooden desk, reading Balzac quietly, with a polystyrene cup containing her espresso to hand. Even though she could barely see her surroundings, she resisted the temptation to switch on one of the desk lights, knowing the dim lighting would allow her more of the element of surprise. This part of the New York Public Library, the rare books section – with its crowded shelves but few visitors – was deserted save for her.

Like clockwork, he appeared. Smart navy-striped suit, possibly Saville Row. Grey hair, broad shoulders, bulky physique. There were three desks between hers and the one he had chosen to sit at.

As far as he was concerned, he was finally getting to meet a representative of the group he had risked so much for. He had sold out some good people to finally get his fingers in a few pies. This was everything he had ever wanted. Money, power, success. He could smell it, taste it almost, and he wore his best suit for the occasion. That morning, when he got the message to meet, he had not thought for a second that he would be placing himself in danger. He was not even concerned that the message came from an unknown source. He was simply overtaken by excitement at finally getting what he deserved. Status.

He had joined the resistance to get knowledge of their inner workings, hoping it would gain him respect from Officium if he could find out enough about their enemy. He was fed up of being an underachiever, a mediocre excuse for a man, and a disappointment to his wife and son. He’d never been fit and strong enough to become an agent, since a childhood illness left him without his left foot. He needed more than to be a simple tailor, in a dwindling and dying market. When a client of his, Hamish Maddon, told him about a resistance group he knew of, he had leapt on the opportunity to get in on it. He made promises about using his clientele to gather information. But he had secretly had a very sinister, ulterior motive. He had unwittingly given up Maddon, who had died along with his wife, after he had revealed the location of RAO’s meetings in New York. However, he had not carried out the act, so as far as he was concerned, he was without sin or recrimination. He simply knew he needed more from life, that’s all, and now he was there – deliriously expectant.

A mildly attractive woman suddenly appeared before him, standing with a book in hand. She smiled sweetly and asked, ‘Excuse me, but do you have the time? I can’t seem to find a single clock in this place.’

‘Of course,’ looking down at his watch, he said, ‘It’s a quarter to two.’

‘Thanks so much, that’s very kind of you.’ She continued smiling at him and stayed standing there. He felt it would be too rude to ask her if there was anything else, but his contact could arrive at any moment, and he became anxious.

She noted, ‘I hear the police are making headway into finally getting hold of the person responsible for the Maddon killings. You know, the heart surgeons? Apparently their loss will now mean at least four dozen people will have to wait six months longer for bypasses.’

He looked up at her face, shock spreading across his. He wondered, but it couldn’t possibly be… He had been so careful… hadn’t he? He nervously stood up. He looked into her eyes, but he struggled to gauge what was behind them. She stood there with hardly any expression whatsoever. That scared him more than anything.

‘Who are you?’ he asked.

‘I’m a friend of the dressmaker. You might have heard of her?’

He wanted to bolt out of the place. He was desperate to just start running.

‘Yes, it was a grave shame about the Maddons. Their daughter is without both her parents now. Imagine that, a young woman without her mum and dad. Being without one would certainly be bad enough, but without both…’

She didn’t seem intimidating, standing there casually holding her book between both hands in front of her. However, her words almost shocked the life out of him. He started to move away from behind the desk to make his escape. However, her book suddenly fell and he was drawn by its flight toward the floor.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw an almost inhuman shadow move with incredible velocity. She leapt up onto the desk he had moved away from, suddenly threw her body in the air and expertly sent a foot crashing into his chest to ensure he had taken his last breath. Then there was nothing. His mass fell to the floor, and she walked toward the exit to the stairwell.

ARC now available

An Advance Review Copy of my latest novel A Fine Pursuit is now available. It is pretty much edited, proofed and set in place so what you’re getting will be pretty much the finished product.

Breathe in, breathe out… phew this is a big thing!

I am offering PDF or Mobi formats for anyone interested in reading this book in exchange for an honest review. It will be so important for the success of this book to have some reviews go up on release day (November 1st) and your reading this book will also give me insights into the market I need to target.

A bit about the book:

If you scroll down my blog on here, you’ll find a prologue, synopsis and other notes. It is an erotic novel written entirely from a male perspective, though I never try to make things particularly slushy whatever voice I am writing in, so slush-haters are safe there. What else I can tell you is this: this is a novel that will interest those who find psychology fascinating. It is also a book that may have you screaming at the pages. It’s very frustrating, but these are real issues I am dealing with. Nevertheless this is a romance, an erotic romance at that, and I have used the romance to offset the difficult issues I tackle. But, well, you’ll see…

To get in touch, you can use the contact sheet on my website sarahmichellelynch.wordpress.com or you can just email me here: smlpublishinguk@gmail.com.

I would so appreciate some takers. A last word from me ‒ this story begged me to tell it. The story behind the work is interesting too. The experience is magnified if you read A Fine Profession first (I can provide copies of that too), but I have written this novel to stand alone if it needs to.

p.s. A Fine Profession will be in paperback very shortly. Watch this space!

FREE and celebratory

FREEBIE ALERT!

October is my birthday month and this year it is quite special because it’s my 30th and I am celebrating my achievements!

The celebrations begin with this free download from today until the end of play on Friday. Beneath the Veil is my first novel and it got me to where I am now. There were so many times I could have given up and I didn’t – and I am still so glad I went with it and did it! It’s hard stretching yourself to a full novel but once you catch the bug, that seems to be it! You’ve got it for life lol.

This is a futuristic dystopian romance of sorts. It defies genre. It is scifi meets romance meets action thriller. Ryken Hardy is the former British army doctor who meets tough NY journalist Seraph Maddon, more militant than writer. She stomps the streets looking for answers to why the world has become so corrupt, while he seems to have secrets he doesn’t want her to know about.

The Ravage Trilogy includes Beneath the Betrayal and Beneath the Exile. The are loads of secrets packed in these books, loads of action scenes, sex, gadgets and thrilling chases. I guess I have been mega busy writing and haven’t given these books the promotion they deserve.

These books mean the world to me because they mark my development as a writer and I just… god. Read them. There is so much more to them than meets the eye. There’s a massive twist in Book One that has explosive consequences in Book Three. There are scenes that take you from Paris to NY, to Russia and NZ and beyond.

I do this because I love words. I love that my words have helped people and most of all, the non-readers I got reading this book are what I did it for.

I am reading BTV myself this week (first time ever I won’t be reading to edit) and will be tweeting my thoughts and feelings! Tweetalong if you dare! @SarahMichelleLy

Side Notes of a Sort

I posted the prologue for A Fine Pursuit but then felt like I wanted to put up a little something else to accompany it. I give nothing away while still intriguing the reader with some insight into what one might expect from this novel.

This time, I have taken the psychological aspect so much further than I did in A Fine Profession. Far enough in fact that you will be watching Noah’s therapy sessions as if from an impartial POV, though you will also have his first-person narrative, which varies from sad and aggressive to the upper echelons of romantic prose. (Of course all this I am saying with some confidence and hoping and praying I have got it right. I feel I have. I hope I have!)

A Fine Pursuit has very short chapters. You need to experience the ride as Noah does. I hardly give him a moment to breathe and it will be the breathless moments I hope, that have you on the edge of your seats. I had to offset the dark, challenging chapters with great romance.

So, a word of warning, if you are planning on buying this book on November 1st, please clear that weekend and set yourself up for a rollercoaster, uninterrupted ride. I’d also recommend re-reading A Fine Profession beforehand, but you know, life gets in the way! I have thoroughly researched these two people’s disorders but I think in this second book, I have allowed more of their individual personalities to shine rather than put too many labels on them. Achieving a balance between romance and exploring such difficult topics has sure been a great challenge!
