Unofficial #NaNoWriMo Blog #1

So on the first day I managed 1,600 words which was rather measly for me (it was a Saturday), but it was something. Second day, nothing. Today just 1,000 words. But they were pretty good words, so that doesn’t bother me. That’s after spending a day doing many other family/work-related things.

So… yes… here is my blog of unofficial #NaNoWriMo.

Why unofficial? I dunno. I am a person who refuses to be defined and I just so happen to be midway through a project which I have, you guessed it… 50,000 words left to write on. I want to try get to 100,000 words at the first draft stage.

I am just leaving an intense period of editing so I am pumped for this challenge and I am writing a storm on the days I do get to write. By write, I mean switch off everything for just two hours and then be able to enjoy the luxury of knowing I can just type at will for that specified block of time. Yes, two hours a day really is enough for me! I can do my 2,000-a-day with that… just when I am able to fit it in. Let’s see, shall we…

More to come…

And yes, something relating to this might be in the works… p.s. grown men cry over this book apparently…

EXCERPT:

We stared at one another and as we did, something low in my belly tightened and I was mesmerised. The blazing sun through the windows made his eyes glitter. Before I knew what was happening, we were fighting for kisses. Violently tasting and trying to own one another. He held tight to my hair at the sides of my head while I pressed my hands to his pecs. Our tongues, teeth and lips weren’t concentric.

His lips travelled the length of my throat and he kissed my heavily exposed cleavage, groaning against my flesh, setting me alight. His hands wandered up and down my sides, tracing the outer curves of my breasts. I could have stayed there all day, kissing him.

Except then he got scary again and threw himself away from me, complaining under his breath, muttering words not meant for me. He ran both hands through his short hair and sure seemed tense. He looked out of the window at his side, looking anywhere but at me.

“We should get some coffee,” he mumbled.

“Okay,” I agreed, though frightened.

Coffee was what Americans did all the time, right? They just ‘got coffee’ to chill themselves out. They did coffee. ‘We’ll do coffee,’ like, ‘We’ll do brunch.’ That type of casual thing. I was clutching at straws—was he taking me to coffee to say we were a big mistake waiting to happen?

He drove the car away from the curb and I couldn’t help but notice he was driving angrily. In fact everything in his stance and expression was angry. It made me feel really uncomfortable and I didn’t like it.

“Why are you being an arsehole?” I mumbled with my hand over my mouth, looking out the window at all the sights meant to be thrilling me. You know, foreign stuff that’s ace just because it’s foreign. I couldn’t care less about where I was truthfully, I just needed to draw a line under what this man did to me… get answers on why he was behaving this way.

He gunned the car harder and I asked, “How far to this bloody coffee place?” How much more terror can I take? He was seriously driving recklessly, taking corners too hard, punching the brakes with his foot, fists grinding against the wheel.

He didn’t relent and that’s when I snapped. “Stop!”

He didn’t react.

“Fucking stop or I’ll…”

He pulled into the sidewalk sharply and glared, “You’ll what?”

My hands were up against the roof of the car, bracing myself—but for what? Anxiety must have taken over. “I grew up surrounded by violence and I will not tolerate your caveman behaviour. If you’re gonna be a cock, then be a cock on your own time. Otherwise just tell me why you’re acting weird.”

“Weird?”

“Yeah, weird. Why are you so angry?” I glanced at him, realising I could take my hands down. I folded my arms and took a deep breath, levelling my eyes to his. “Is that why you box? It’s like… the way you look, right now… it’s scaring me. You’re a coiled spring, desperate to release. Admit it.”

He bent over the steering wheel and nodded, taking some deep breaths of his own. He chuckled hysterically and brought his eyes back, apology now in them. “I’m sorry, I’m an ass. I don’t know why I’m being like this. Forgive me?”

“Okay,” I blushed. He reached across and nudged his nose against mine, and I held his cheeks in my hands, staring at his shut eyes. He took some more deep breaths.

“Forgive me?” His warm breath heated my veins.

“I do,” I said, my heartbeat probably as loud as my words. I wanted to tell him so many things in that moment. You know—that I wanted him more than I’d ever wanted any man, that he could trust me if he needed to, that I would be there for him. It just wasn’t the right time to, though, I knew it. “Shall we get that coffee? Jetlag is starting to kick my arse.”

He winked, “Sure.”

REVIEWER THOUGHTS:

For once, and here I congratulate the author, each love scene was individual: not merely a rehash of the same actions such as we often read.

The author developed these characters so effortlessly, piecing their back stories together as the plot progressed. The mysterious nature of ALL of the characters throughout was quite thrilling and kept me guessing all the way to the end.

I really enjoyed the well-written story and quickly fell in love with the characters, twists and turns. Will be reading all Sarah’s books now.

For the Sake of a Child – a book review

For the Sake of a Child coverFOUR STARS!!

Another Stevie classic!

For the Sake of a Child started cautiously but quickly picked up pace. I had a few queries that weren’t fully answered until the epilogue…! So I won’t spoil this too much for other readers who need to get to the epilogue before they fully understand the message here!

This book is for people wanting a quick read that keeps you turning the pages, keeps you invested in the characters and the twists involving a paedophile ring seemingly unbreakable! I previously asked Stevie for some sex and she gave us a little bit so I nod you there, Stevie. That’s just me. I would love a chunky romance novel from Stevie but I notice she likes to deviate from the path and really make readers question – which is admirable.

I could so easily see this book as a Woman’s Hour radio play; it has that quick-style prose that keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you hear the voices rather than see the action. That’s only a good thing in this case.

One of the secrets of UNBIND…

It’s been a busy week of writing, editing, networking and… I have gotten a few more reviews of Unbind! I’m quite proud that most readers seem to be coming back with the same thoughts – the sex is well-written but isn’t tantamount, yet adds a certain extra flavour! Even one lady told me her husband says, “Thank you.”

I am reluctant to talk about Unbind until enough people have read it (finding time for the old plugging is proving a nightmare right now with one issue or another!). Anyway, there is one dynamic of this book I’d like to talk about and it’s the day that changed the life of our hero in this novel, Cai Matthews. I drew from Ian McEwan with this one… the scene where Cecelia and Robbie “do it” and her little sister gets totally the wrong impression… you know the one, in Atonement. By the way, I love Ian McEwan but someone once told my love scenes were a bit more, well, you know…

In my bid to be contrary and write something I hoped would be totally original, I wrote the same pivotal scene in Unbind from three different POVs. The day Cai’s life changed forever can not only be viewed from his perspective, but also his mother’s, and the spying housekeeper’s. Each POV (deviating from the main narrative which is Chloe 1st person, past tense) is from the third person in past tense. I just wanted to twist words a little bit because you have to question what’s true sometimes. We’re so often given a headline or a news bulletin, you know, and we take it as truth. I had to stand from above this scene and look down on it from a bird’s-eye view, then tell you what people are seeing or more to the point, not seeing. Sometimes, there’s just that little piece of missing info that sheds a ton of light on the scenario. I think we read third person like we read first person, the only difference is in third person we have less of the emotion and we’re not driven by the protagonist as much, more by the narrator delivering that passage or chapter(s) as the action happens. You’ll have to read it to decide for yourselves… but I doubt you’ll think this is the cleverest trick I rolled out in this book!

Anyway, the title Unbind very much refers to the nature of the Catch-22 Cai finds himself in, and this is what he has to find his way out of, but you might not expect the way in which he does escape…! The whole Unbind-ing of his predicament isn’t simple, and so, moving into the planning of the next novel… we shall have a much more emotive delivery of Cai and how his world works. We will dive right into the mind of an artist… and one thing I am desperate not to do… is rely on soap-opera to move my writing along. Nope. I won’t include a car crash or anything like cheating or whatever… this is purely a character assassination (with sex) that will hopefully test me and my writing yet again, hopefully thrilling you in return! Ideas are already brimming my mind!

Check out Unbind if you’re looking for steamy romance with just that extra bit of intrigue and some characters that feel real to me, so I hope they do to you too! One elderly chap said, “This would sell without the erotic elements.” I think my week is complete. 🙂

****NEWS NEWS NEWS****

UNFURLMy Latest Series…. the SUB ROSA books!!!!! Yes it’s a series now!

When I was writing Unbind, I was so conflicted about where I was taking the story. I wanted to write a standalone and in many respects, the novel does work as a standalone. There isn’t a cliffy.

However, there are a lot of aspects of the novel that can be expanded upon. There are deep, dark secrets and nothing in Unbind is ever as it seems.

In my mind, there were always going to be three books in this series and there will be three. I just didn’t know if I had it in me to write more. Cai and Chloe are complex and their FULL story just doesn’t fit into one book.

Unfurl will be an expansion of Unbind and that is all I am prepared to tell you right now.

The third novel will feature the story of a different character. A really, interesting character.

I didn’t want this to be a series but all the time, certain ideas niggled the back of my mind. I wasn’t sure if I had the energy to continue writing these characters’ stories but it appears I do!!!

As a special incentive to get you to read this… please take a look at the introduction below I added at the beginning of this series of books, which will always be very special to me! No books will ever equal these because they were my first.

***

Introduction to the Quadrilogy

How might an obscure Yorkshire woman get you to invest hours of your time in a series spanning more than 400,000 words? More than four continents? More than four decades? Multiple genres including romance, thriller, sci-fi and dystopia… I don’t know…!

In all honesty all I can do is to tell you what it means to me to have achieved such a series as this. I can tell you it began with a dream when I was twenty-six years old. I’m now thirty-one so you can get some picture of just how far this journey has taken me! I had this dream… and in it I saw a couple who were clearly meant to be. Yet something was stopping them being together. In the periphery of this dream I saw clearly an outer context and an elderly woman intent on bringing this pair together.

Many months passed as my brain put a bridal shop together with this theory of a future world in which hope is lost, people gave up on reproduction ‒ plus some conglomeration obsessed with scientific progression is at the core. It was maternity leave that finally gave me chance to pursue something I have loved since a very small age ‒ writing! I continually remind myself that not many people get a chance like I did to explore something I feel so passionate about. We live in a busy, busy world and I am grateful every day, that I did this. That I never gave up even when I could have done, so many times. It was mentally difficult to accomplish this series ‒ soul-searching, wringing wet tissues, doubts, fears ‒ those were the worst moments. How many ideas do people have but never follow through with? I only think it was my blind stubbornness or fate that eventually got this thing through to completion. Perhaps it was the never-ending faith my husband had in me ‒ the almighty push onwards he gave me after I jumped over every hurdle. He never gave up encouraging me.

What undoubtedly makes these books what they are and may surprise you are the characters, which took me on their journey, sweeping me along for the ride. They exploded from my mind so quickly, spilling their stories page after page. I couldn’t keep up with them sometimes, it was an immense adventure-a-minute trying to!

When I think of writing this series, I will recall nappy changes, sleepless nights, late-night talks with my husband about plots, characters, possibilities… always endless possibilities. I will recall music that kept me going throughout writing sessions. When I hear certain tracks on the radio I say to myself, “That is a Ryken and Seraph song.” Or, you know… (no spoilers here…)!

This is truly a series that I could keep writing forever, and ever, and ever. Who knows? I might yet write more futuristic novels. There is certainly the scope to do so. I could keep doing this and fundamentally, the reason is that I truly love it. I didn’t write this series with any expectation, any kind of plan, except to just write what I wanted to ‒ and I did.

Peace out.

Seven Lovely Things

I was tagged by Christina Harding, erotic writer and reviewer, whose blog you can find here. She previously read and enjoyed Bedtime Confessions and A Fine Profession!

Christina asked me to participate in the Seven Lovely Things Blog Tour!

The rules are simple, share 7 Lovely Facts about myself, nominate 15 blogs (or as many as possible) that I enjoy reading, and nominate those same 15 blogs to do the same, linking back to my post.

So now you get to learn seven lovely things about me, Sarah Michelle Lynch:

seven lovely things

  1. I began writing science fiction but when I sidestepped into erotica, I found a whole new, amazing, exciting, challenging audience who embraced me like no other.
  2. I have a qualification in electronics and I can solder pretty darn well.
  3. My first wallpapering experience was doing my staircase. My dad thought a professional had done it.
  4. I love all the films guys love, except horrors. Can’t do horror. But I’d much rather see a Bourne movie to a chick flick. Sorry! In fact, whenever me and my husband talk about my sci-fi books, the high-octane Bourne music is usually playing in the background.
  5. I use my real name to write under. I considered a pseudonym plenty of times and just landed on Sarah Michelle Lynch. I only use my middle name because there are quite a lot of Sarah Lynch’s in the world! I reverted to S.M. Lynch for the sci-fi cause well, it suited the covers better!!
  6. A Fine Profession is based in reality, only in that I know someone who had chronic low self-esteem. Through some intensive life coaching, they came through the other side.
  7. I am the oldest of four kids; my brother and two sisters are all younger than me. We’re all different and I’m the only writer. We’ve all travelled a lot; my dad was in the RAF and none of us have ever stood still very long. We spent a stint in Saudi Arabia when my mum was expecting my first sister. I remember a lot about living there even though I was only five.

And for my nominations!!!

  1. Stevie Turner, author of The Porn Detective and many other great books
  2. Beem Weeks, author of Jazz Baby and proud Indie supporter
  3. Blake Rivers, author of The Assassin Princess and my sounding-off buddy
  4. Matthew Smith, founder of Urbane Publications – great advice and has read a few of my books
  5. Y. Correa, author and founder of All Authors Magazine
  6. Queen of Spades, author and reviewer
  7. Nikki McDonagh, YA author, lovely person
  8. Harmony Kent, author and reviewer, general lovely person
  9. Ray Sostre, AfterDark Online and great support
  10. Charming Man, author!
  11. Traci Sanders, author!
  12. Thomas Ullman, author!
  13. Audrina Lane, author and fan of mine!
  14. Felicity Brandon, purveyor of filth extraordinaire 😉
  15. Andrew Climance, founder of Squid Inc – a great help to me over the years

I hope you give it a go guys!

Thanks everyone 🙂

Unbind, the first novel in the SUB ROSA series

I never intended this but I can confirm, Unbind is the first novel in a new series.

I argued with myself and my editor over this so much. I had so much material here and I strove to keep this within one novel. I just couldn’t. Half of the next novel is already written because I have so much material in notes, in the MALE POV that were removed from the first book to maintain the mystery of Unbind. It’s funny sometimes, when you come away from a novel, you sometimes feel like the characters just have more to tell and it’s not anything to do with the fact that you just can’t let go. Sometimes it’s just that their stories were BIG and you just couldn’t fit it all in one novel. There is stuff left over. In this case, it was just that CAI was too interesting a character to let slope off. His family history is so broad and sprawling, there is more there – I feel it. I want to reach out and grasp the rest now.

SUB ROSA… the name given to Cai’s family home in Connecticut. In Latin… and if you look back at history… it means a lot, lot more. That is all I can say for now. A master manipulator is at work in these books and no secret dies

THE SUB ROSA series will encompass two novels that follow on one from the other… and a possible third novel, a spin-off, featuring an entirely different character(s). Watch this space!

Why Do I Write? A Blog Hop…

Thank you Charming Man for asking me to do this Blog Hop. Pay Charming Man, also known as A S Wilkins, a visit to see why he writes! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing his comments on this subject, and more besides.

I too have been asked a number of times to explain why I write. I have even wrote poetry about why I write! It does seem to vary from writer to writer but ultimately we all seem to have the same goals in mind: we have something to say, we have a shared enjoyment of forming stories and we wouldn’t mind one day seeing our words on shelves.

I have written professionally since my early twenties and now in my early thirties… well… you get the picture. My words had been out there for years before I began writing creatively. When I first started getting paid for writing, I thought it was such a novelty because writing has always been something I have enjoyed. Don’t get me wrong, you won’t ever get paid much for writing. Not unless you drop lucky with the right thing at the right time. Those stories are very few and far between. Apparently the average novelist earns about £11,000 a year but that is of course an average. I earned more than that writing TV magazine features.

Why I write? I guess writing is installed in me like WiFi is in nearly every home in the land these days. I was told from a really early age that I could write and I knew that how I felt when I wrote was what made it special, because… this is where it is hard to explain… it feels good to write and it feels, basically, REAL. It’s hard to put it into words even though I am meant to be a wielder of words! LOL. Like I said, so many teachers actually sat me down and said with a restrained smirk, “You do know you can write?” I would sit and gawp, inwardly think they were deranged, and ask, “What do you mean I can write?” Then they would say, “Not many people can write.” Over the years I got to realise exactly what they meant because the formation of sentence structure and all that is really a struggle for some whose brains are wired differently, but obviously my brain is wired toward words. Don’t ask me why. I know I am certainly not wired properly in other ways… not that I am crazy! Okay, maybe just a bit! I just can’t sing and I don’t think I will ever be able to draw.

My story began on maternity leave. I wrote a sci-fi series with a baby attached to me. It was an idea that had been brewing in my mind for so long and when I gave birth, it brewed some more and when my daughter began sleeping, it got put down on a page. Writing those books was like breathing, to me, and not writing them was not even a possibility. I had to write those books. Even when I went back to work, I found time to write. I made time. It was hard but I enjoyed it so much. Whenever I finish a novel, I think, “Not again, not again,” but if an idea starts to brew and I start to think about where I could take it, that’s what pushes me on to write again. So I guess one of the essential reasons I write is that there are always paths to venture down and you never know where you may end up. I like writing stories a little differently, sometimes… testing what I can and can’t get away with in terms of exposition. It’s the pattern and the puzzle and the arrangement I like. That’s what I can get involved with, anytime, anywhere. That’s how I know wherever I am, whatever point in my life I’m at, I’ll always make time to write even if it’s just a few paragraphs each day. Because it’s having that chance to explore and play with words—and that is something I truly, truly love.

One thing I will say is that it took me a long time to snap from journalist to creative writer. As a journalist you are taught to shed all the nuances of your writing and to hone everything so that you present the details in as few words as possible. That was a hard thing to learn and to some extent, I had to unlearn that when I came to writing novels. Writers are told they should start small and work their way up from say short stories or poetry but I honestly just had this story in my mind that was so big, I had to get it down and there was no build-up—the result a 100,000-word beast that was my first novel and my first creative outing too.

My latest book features a journalist. She is happy enough to plod along until someone says, “You know what? You can do better.” I think writers write and continue to write according to response and approval, too. Many writers would argue they only improve through their readers and from feedback. That is why I think writers just have to keep writing and why every word counts, because it could lead to a monumental paragraph or sentence, even. If you stand there thinking, Shall I pick up the pen? you probably never will. I know that I wouldn’t have kept writing novels with such verve unless I’d gotten such positive feedback. Some people have even come to me after reading A Fine Profession and said, “I am going to change my life now after reading that.” Some books aren’t easy books but you just know that it feels right to write, at that point in time.
