Note From the Author

The Sub Rosa Trilogy has been a part of my life for almost eighteen months but last summer when I finished Book One, Unbind, I wasn’t sure I had the energy or the inclination to write more in the series. This almost did not happen. It was always in the back of my mind that the series could be a trilogy but for some reason, I was hesitant to make it so. However I’m happy to confirm I’m really glad people asked for more and I’m really pleased with what I’ve ended up with!

Now, I finally bring you the third and final book in the series. Would I like to write more of these characters? The answer is yes. Will I? No. Absolutely not. I have to leave it where it is now. The story is wrapped up and that’s that. I might write extra scenes, release deleted scenes, but the story ends in Unleash. These characters can only live on in readers now. So it’s with sadness I say goodbye, it’s with happiness and anticipation I let the books fly free.

TEASER

UNLEASH2

Unleash is a story about love though it does answer a lot of questions left unanswered regarding the Sub Rosa secrets. I wanted to write a perfect love which has the most imperfect beginning and not only is it a perfect love, it’s a perfect love between two hugely flawed characters. It’s about how people in real life come to the BDSM lifestyle and how the lifestyle can be abused but also, how BDSM can change the lives of people and bring them closer than they ever imagined possible.

And, that’s that.

♡♡Enjoy!♡♡

Portraying BDSM

4adfc5b4b800df3bddd41684f5cc4693

In my latest book UNLEASH, which I’m now almost finished editing, the heroine Kayla Tate has spent years finding sexual relationships largely unfulfilling. Well, until she meets THE ONE. He just happens to be a DOMINANT.

KAY (4)I’m not talking about fantasy BDSM, I’m talking about the BDSM that real couples in real life engage in. Perhaps I am opening a can of worms (considering BDSM in itself is about fantasy in some respect), but I guess what I’m going to try to explain is how my latest research has informed UNLEASH, a book featuring a healthy, not to mention sustainable, dom/sub relationship.

This article is difficult to write because there’s a lot about the book I don’t want to reveal. However I’ve been told to write blogs about what I feel passionate about and portraying BDSM as something couples do not to inflict pain on one another, but to express their love and trust, is something I feel very passionate about.

Coincidentally, this article presented itself to me this morning and when I read it, I was nodding along a bit: http://hustlerhollywoodstores.com/4-things-you-need-to-know-before-you-try-bdsm/

b1a8372a942f57008e6eaa513d500bc2

If you’re an author you can probably relate to this: sometimes during the writing of a book, you come across all sorts of articles or stories in conversation and they kind of make you realise you’re on the right track with an angle—sometimes a real-life titbit of information may just add to or embellish something you’ve already written. It may be fate that we come across coincidental articles/books/films/documentaries or it might be we find ourselves gravitating towards certain topics because the story we’re working on is absorbing our minds so much, we sink ourselves into anything vaguely resembling the issues our current WIP (work in progress) deals with.

erotica

Anyway, I was glad when I read the above article because it’s all stuff I’ve got down in UNLEASH and hopefully, the book will deliver you an account of how, why, where and what couples do when they engage in BDSM. Nevertheless, it’s not a book filled with page after page of scenes in a dungeon. In fact there’s only one scene in a dungeon! The book is an existential one, so the personality traits of the characters themselves are more important; their preferences and their lifestyles outside the bedroom surmount the sex. Rather than give you a rundown of tools and appropriate clothing, I’ve put you in the minds of two people who are kinky—and what made and still makes them kinky.

8096556934_cb21d5812c_z

UNLEASH is a complex book I’ve had a lot of headaches with because as well as portraying BDSM right (people who practice BDSM aren’t always abused, but sometimes BDSM is actually a wonderful way for the abused to feel safe and heal if nurtured properly), I’ve also got a web of lies to undo and a few more than two characters to get right. I’ve got four characters. Two couples. While one of the couples is more casually kinky (Cai and Chloe, who are occasional spankers, not dom/sub as such), the other couple on the flip side only know how to express their true selves through BDSM. The dom/sub duo in UNLEASH still enjoy normal sex but for some reason, BDSM just gives them a tad more freedom to be themselves. So with lies to uncover, back stories to tell and characters to build, the sex isn’t the focus but it’s there bubbling under the surface and I really hope UNLEASH just shows how in real life, men and women come to participate and engage in healthy, beautiful BDSM relationships.

Here’s just a few of the interesting points of view I’ve come across in my research:

  • The sub chooses her dom.
  • Doms are extremely caring and attentive.
  • Some abused women find themselves drawn to being submissive; and the dynamic can prove healing, but it has to be one of consent, communication and choice.
  • BDSM couples often have more frank discussions about their needs/wants.
  • It’s not always about pain.
  • The high that subs may experience after an intense BDSM session is akin to being on drugs. It’s a myth it’s all about the dom’s pleasure!
  • Aftercare is paramount. Many people who engage in BDSM say aftercare is the most intimate part of the experience and that is their favourite thing about it all, in fact.
  • Sexually submissive women are often dominant in various other areas of life.

5d06704cc0cbc6de94211bc220c12a3e

Perhaps I am treading a fine line putting a previously raped woman in a BDSM relationship with a Daddy Dom. Or maybe the abused woman finds empowerment and freedom in submitting. The difference being, with her dom she always has a choice and in actual fact, she’s the one very much in charge. Perhaps BDSM gives her freedom and escape from who she is outside the dungeon? Like I said though, the BDSM aspect of this book is just a small part, though pivotal to the whole. The plot is the central player in my books and the sex is just an added bonus! So, why do we keep writing books about sex? I guess because erotic books tell us so much about human nature…

Some more new reviews…

The Sub Rosa Trilogy is one you’ll start and not be able to turn your back on, if the reviews and messages I’ve had from readers so far are anything to go by! It’s only a couple of days now until I reveal the cover for the third book, UNLEASH, and so it’s a good time to start getting stuck into the series with the first book UNBIND. ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

ONLY today I received this review of UNFURL and this bit of the review pretty much sums up what the series has in store:-

Finding not truths, but in fact more layers of lies, Chloe and Cai weave through a complex story of shame, guilt, abuse and love that seems to visit all hidden facets of human behaviour. With gangsters and art, deaths and secrets, revelations and love, Unfurl truly is a masterpiece from Sarah Michelle Lynch. One to be damned proud of!

An alternative name for this book though that came to mind was UNLOCK, for when the petals of this story do unfurl, complete with UNBIND, the doors of this thrilling piece unlock. You can almost hear the key scrape as it turns, and the characters follow its course to the inevitable yet captivating conclusion.

In short. Yes! I loved it!

In this dark, romantic tale of revenge, Cai explodes the deepest, most destructive aspects of his past as he comes to terms with the tragedy at the heart of Jennifer’s downfall. With Chloe’s love and support, he must brave his demons and dodge death to finally end a bitter feud between two damaged families.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gifted by author in exchange for an honest review. 13 April 2015
By Books and Beyond Fifty ShadesPublished on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Cai and Chloe are trying to live as normal life as possible. All that changes when Cai’s past comes back to haunt him…again. When Jennifer dies, Chloe is shocked that Cai doesn’t care that she’s dead. What Chloe doesn’t know is Cai has been waiting for when it would happen. Can Chloe help Cai deal with his past and all the damage between the two families? Cai must find a way to deal with his past without losing Chloe. Is Chloe strong enough to help Cai deal with his past?

This dark romance shows how as much as you want to protect the ones you love; you can’t. Cai must trust Chloe to help him fight the demons that won’t go away. But are the lies and deceit going to be too much for Chloe to handle? I thought I couldn’t love this series anymore after I read Unbind, but once I was finished with Unfurl I changed my mind. This series is a MUST READ!

We finally have the ending to Chloe and Cai’s story and I promise you it’s not one to be missed. If you thought that Unbind had crazy secrets, Unfurl takes it one step farther. All the mystery of Cai’s past comes together and I literally screamed when 2 big reveals happened. Sarah Michelle does a beautiful job tying up all loose ends from Unbind. Again, she is so descriptive with her writing that you can literally see this all happening in your head. The characters are more relatable than ever.

I truly hope you give them a chance; I promise you that you will not be disappointed!!

5.0 out of 5 starsWow so many twists it made me dizzy! 2 April 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
Finished this on Thursday night and still thinking about it now!! A real page turner but at slow speed as you really need to take in everything that is going on! A fabulous sequel to Unbind and one I had to read to get the answers to all the questions from the first. Cai and Chloe are still together (fab) and on a learning curve to trust and the truth. There are so many little and big twists and turns that I sometimes had to re-read sections to make sure I hadn’t missed anything.
All I can say is if you have read the 1st book then this is a MUST READ. If you haven’t read the first book then you NEED TOO!! I hate revealing plots but I wish I could see in reality the paintings that Cai is responsible for (sigh) and wish he would paint me as that guy is seriously HOT!!!
I am now looking forward to Kayla’s story…….who knows what other secrets will be revealed.

CHAMBERMAID SALE NOW ON #KindleCountdown 99cents/99pence

9f4c8-afineprofessionwebsiteuseBLURB:

Charlotte “Lottie” Taylor survived childhood cancer and then spent years feeling at odds with who she was and where her life was heading. A chambermaid at a run-of-the-mill hotel chain, she found escape in her imagination and eventually discovered expression in a sideline dominating men.

She spent nights disciplining her “initiates” and delivering a service their wives often ordered on their behalf. What she didn’t expect was to fall in love when a chance encounter put her in the arms of Noah Yeardley, a man with a history as interesting as her own. The only man to ever dominate Lottie, together they explored their fantasies. Yet the fantasy broke down and Lottie was forced to revisit past issues.

Charlotte’s erotic tale is one of sexual awakening and self fulfilment—a human story of making mistakes, learning to love yourself and finding true love with another.

The story continues in A Fine Pursuit, a continuation of the story from Noah’s POV.

REVIEW BY BEEM WEEKS:

Though it’s billed as chick-lit, A Fine Profession by Sarah Michelle Lynch is much more than that simple genre tag allows. What I discovered between these electronic pages is an involved story that’s engaging in ways as to draw the interests of both sexes. To label it as mere chick-lit or erotica serves only to lure a certain segment of readers while keeping others at bay.

This is the story of Lottie, a practitioner of all things sexual, hence the erotica label. But the story delves deeper into the human condition, examining the choices made by this one woman. Lottie is the one telling the story of her own sexual awakening, spilling her secrets to Heath, a private investigator sent to track down this mysterious Chambermaid. The sex scenes certainly call for an audience of 18 years of age and older; but don’t be turned away. Lynch has crafted a well-written story filled with fleshed-out characters that are as real as any literary characters I’ve ever read. We learn of Lottie’s childhood battle with illness, of her struggles with early-adulthood responsibilities, and of the true love she seeks. But just who sent this private investigator to track down the Chambermaid? You’ll have to purchase your own copy to get answers. This is a book I feel safe in recommending. I don’t normally read erotica, but A Fine Profession offers so much more than simple sex. I rate Lynch’s novel 5 out of 5 stars.

19b41-afinepursuitcoverBLURB:

In the sequel to A Fine Profession…

They were two souls wandering aimlessly until they met; their collision instant, categorical and unforgettable. Yet, their powerful sexual chemistry was still not enough to bind them together. Lottie provided her version of the story, now Noah gives us his…

Noah Yeardley, the inimitable investment banker who captured the Chambermaid’s heart, is a man misunderstood and wronged. With their love story circulating, he feels raw and useless. As he comes to terms with the death of his father and all that passed on with him, he knows The Pursuit is something he has a fine grasp of ‒ and is determined to do whatever it takes to bring back the only woman to truly sink herself into his heart.

When he is presented with a second chance, a long summer of hot dream dates, devastating confessions and shocking revelations await – but is the fantasy about to become a reality, or will Noah’s past make it impossible for him to forge a new life with Charlotte?

REVIEW BY BLAKE RIVERS:

Having received an Advance Review Copy of this book, I made sure that I got stuck in as soon as possible. I had never read an erotic story before this, though I had a good idea as to what to expect. However, I was very surprised.

With or without the erotica in this book, the multiple dimensions of this read bring me to the conclusion that this is not about sex. This is about a relationship. It is a book about two people, who have both had damaged pasts, getting together and trying their hardest to make it work. It is a book of psychological entanglement, though whereas the main character, Charlotte, has dealt with most of her issues, the male lead has yet to face his daemons fully.

Noah reminded me much of myself, a mind left in a state of confusion and barriers. His love for Charlotte is so strong that he feels he must attack the haunts of his mind to free himself to love her as she deserves to be loved. It was a personable experience, one that you can get entrenched in easily. You can see these struggles behind closed doors, if you peek through the keyholes. Two people who are mad for each other, but repel like opposing magnets when they get too close. Annihilation.

This story is about the damage control of that annihilation, and throughout there are graphic sexual scenes, to be sure, but written in a way that you accept as being ‘their thing’. It is not the theme of the book, nor is it trying to force itself upon you. You are looking through the window of a truly complex relationship that is slowly blossoming, but is–and has been in the past–fuelled by pure animal, sexual prowess. Two strong and sexually strong personalities colliding, while between them the creation of a family unit, baby included.

I was taken totally by the amount of research that has gone into the making of this book, the actions and reactions to some of the most potent psychological explorations and traumas of the human mind. It deserves the five stars and more, and it is certainly a recommended read.

More profound that 50 shades of any colour you like.

UNFURL – PROLOGUE

COMING SOON!!

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

EVERYDAY I WOKE, and I was nothing. I went to sleep, and I was less. When I opened my eyes to the world on my 21st birthday, it wasn’t a day to celebrate. It was the same as any other.

I lifted my head to look at the blinding, ignorant world outside the window and felt an instant need to spew. I ran from my bed to the toilet and evacuated my guts into the bowl.

Everyday, the same.

I swallowed hard and panted as I rested back against the cold tile. I couldn’t keep doing this to my body, I knew it. Breaking myself down just so I could build myself back up, fuelling the demons just so I could kill them again in the ring.

The cycle, perpetual.

I stood and walked back out into the apartment she bought for me. At the window, I looked down on Brooklyn and Manhattan beyond that… and I felt, nothing.

Nothing.

On my skin and in my hair I detected more than one female aroma, though the memory of all that was a blurred recollection. I pressed my hand to the glass window and held myself up, the urge to vomit still there.

In my stomach I felt empty and in my heart, there was less than an ounce of anything. My vision was skewed by rainbows of light that weren’t on the spectrum and I didn’t recognise the reflection that stared back at me in the tinted window.

The night before, a Friday, I’d partied hard. Nothing unusual.

I didn’t vomit because of the drink, but because I indulged on everything to excess.

Everything.

Everything that was bad. Everything I didn’t want, but had to have anyway.

I threw my sack of shit body into the shower and burned the entrails away, from my skin at least. From my exterior, just not the inside.

Inside, decay and desolation remained.

I walked out for some breakfast—some orange juice and oatmeal—and picked up my mail as I walked back into the building.

Back in my apartment upstairs, I noticed a parcel amongst the junk—and was surprised to find it contained a number of legal documents. I had only moved in a couple days ago but Jennifer’s people had seen to all the admin on the apartment, so what this was I didn’t know. I feared the contents, unsure what was going on. I didn’t know about this kind of stuff. Since moving to New York I’d never had to worry about anything monetary because Jennifer had always taken care of that for me.

I scanned through and noticed the lawyers on the letterhead weren’t the people Jennifer used. I deduced I had become the owner of some other property and was convinced there had been some error. I called them and said, “You sent me all this stuff but I think there’s been a mistake…”

There hadn’t.

This, was genuine?

I signed a couple of things and personally returned the papers to the lawyers’ office on Third Avenue, first thing Monday.

I asked ‘Turner, Ace and Patrick LLP’ who’d done this for me? They wouldn’t say; they couldn’t disclose a benefactor who’d asked to remain anonymous. All that they’d say was that he had an unusual look.

In exchange I got handed the keys to a potential enterprise that was all mine and though I was suspicious, I went to inspect it anyway.

I walked around the empty space and envisaged how the building had been used before. There were too many tall windows to count and some of those industrial tube lights in the ceiling. It was clearly meant to be used as gallery space but needed work. Doors hung off hinges, damp lurked in places, the floors were a mess and the brick needed repairing—in fact it needed knocking down and starting from scratch! The place didn’t just pose an aesthetic challenge, but a structural one too.

With plenty of wall space available, I should’ve just bought a couple cans of spray paint and made it my own, called it art—had the hoards come through and pay to see the inside of my shattered mind.

I frequently dreamed of bleak landscapes… burning effigies. Bloodied and battered faces and piles of rotting corpses. If I unleashed my mind, who knew what I might create? No doubt something akin to the inside of her mind, something controversial enough to warrant a craze.

No, no! I had to switch that impulse off. It would be a place to sell photographs, not a canvas for the paintings that refused to erase themselves from my burnt vision.

It would cost a bomb just to keep the building standing, so I needed to find work—and fast. As I absorbed my surroundings, she texted and asked if I liked the apartment, my birthday present from her. I thought about my reply for a long time before I finally replied: It suffices.

I thought my response cold, to the point, unquestionable. Succinct. Nothing for her to chew through and spit out.

Moving out of her place on Fifth Avenue had been a long time coming. I never brought women home—I kept all that at the clubs. However, she brought her lovers home with her; men, women, multiple partners. It caused too many arguments between us.

So this gift—the gallery—definitely wasn’t from her. She only ever gave to receive and never without motive. She wouldn’t hand over a gallery in secret, it wasn’t her style. She was all about the showy gestures, all about the control.

This gallery wasn’t her idea. Whose, though? I couldn’t be sure.

As I wandered my own floors and checked out my new patch, I saw a chance. Possibility. Somebody out there wanted me to succeed. Who? I didn’t know! Yet someone could see in me some sort of potential. I had to believe that.

During the days that followed I returned to the gallery again and again, drawing up plans of what I would do with the place if I had money. I didn’t tell Jennifer I was in possession of a gallery but she found out anyway. She knew everything. She had spies, everywhere. She scoffed, of course, warned she would decimate any attempt of mine to make good on such a venture. I didn’t let her snide comments get to me because I had a gallery and that meant someone, somewhere, thought well of me. From then on, I would be better. I would.

I poured my liquor supply down the sink, this simple act already distancing me from who I didn’t want to be. I flushed my pill packets, too. It was time. I didn’t like that stuff and now I had something to work toward, I couldn’t be doing that shit anymore.

What more could she do to hurt me, anyway? There was no mortgage to sabotage, no reputation to ruin. My gallery, like my work, was the pits. Yet it had room for growth and she couldn’t touch that, even though she hated it.

I just didn’t know what lay in store for me.

If only I knew then, what I know now…

Excerpt:

In simple answer, I smiled and said genuinely, “I really don’t think we have met before. In fact I am sure we haven’t.”

“Hmm.” He held his chin and scratched the black stubble that looked the colour of mercury against his pallid complexion. “Well, I feel like we have met before. In fact I am usually really good at reading people, but you are so… unreachable.”

I nodded, because I agreed with him. “Lots of people say that, don’t worry. I am unreadable, unreachable… even. My husband often doesn’t thank me for it. I just prefer to keep my mystery, I suppose.”

“Doesn’t every woman?” He smiled with a twinkle in his eye.

I didn’t like how awkward it was all becoming, this random stranger appearing in my path like this, so I made a move to leave.

Except he barred my way with an arm and before I could protest, he pulled me into his arms and placed a strange but soul-wrenching kiss on my lips. It wasn’t even that I was attracted to him, no. It wasn’t that his kiss even came close to the kind of kisses I shared with Louis. No.

It was that his kiss brought to mind strange sexual images of him devouring my secret places and sampling me in ways not even Louis had yet. Also, even though his skin remained cold, his kiss was warm and as he held my cheeks in his hands, I didn’t—simply couldn’t—put up a fight of any sort.

I put my hands in his hair and it was so soft. As he kissed me much more deeply, his tongue expertly swirled around mine. I tasted something I had never tasted before, yet I couldn’t describe it. There was no taste like it. A few seconds later, I felt my whole body come alive with an aggressive arousal and I pulled away shaking and shocked.

“I love my husband,” I yelled, and I pulled the dogs with me hastily.

He did not follow me, not in body at least.

FIRST FIVE STAR REVIEW ON AMAZON UK:

5.0 out of 5 stars Fangtalisingly good!! 12 Dec 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I was given an early review copy of this as Sarah knows how much I enjoy her books. This is no exception my only complaint is that it ended too soon!! but then I know she is planning to write another.
I love a good (or should I say bad) vampire hero and Fabien is no exception, his intentions are good but in the bedroom he is a very hot, bad boy!! I enjoyed the way the story switches between his life in the past and the present where he collides in a very dramatic fashion with Louis and Jaimiee and then her twin Jodie. And the love scene between Fabien and the vampire Queen Leticia had me gasping with excitement and desire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I can say is if you need a story that you can devour in a couple of evenings then this is for you!!

Reaching 100,000 Words and Knowing…

…you now have another novel. That recently happened for me. It’s a point where you feel achievement, also a point where you know there’s much more work to do!

Often the story of creation is a story in itself, one you feel loathe to tell, but might be just as important as the work you’re creating.

A lot of my books centre on psychology and it’s something I have always been fascinated by. The human mind and its strengths, weaknesses and possibilities are why we write after all. I’ve found with my recent books, 100K is around about the stage I find myself with a first draft. In the first draft I’ve told myself the story, and now instead of telling it, I need to build upon what I’ve already established and embellish the events that make sense of the mystery. It is time to slow it down and explode the smells, sights, feelings, thoughts and dialogue… et al. So in other words, I need to ensure the reader can see exactly what I see.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????When I was writing UNBIND, the prequel to the novel I’m currently writing, I didn’t want to put a label on the complex psychology of one person in that novel. I still don’t. We all know mental illness is a complex thing, a grey area, and I consciously created a character you can’t put into one box or another. Going forward into the sequel, I had a job on my hands to keep away from that box and still not put this particular person into one category or another.

So when you’ve written about difficult topics in the past (i.e. issues of the mind), you feel like you have to find different ways of exploring those avenues…

I probably would have made myself ill in trying to keep UNBIND at just the one book. I know that sounds freaking crazy!! There was too much story and what I took out of UNBIND, I did purposely, so I could write a whole other story in UNFURL. No way is the sequel a retelling of the first book or a rehash. It’s not the same book, it’s got its own plot, yet some bits elevate and expand upon UNBIND. As an author, it is the hardest thing to know your characters and to try to write their stories without ruining the suspense.

UNFURL came to me so thick and fast and when I read it through last week, I felt the arrangement set into place inside my mind and I knew after that… I knew what I had left to do.

Yet still, the mysterious character I’ve alluded to in this blog is more than just a victim. She’s so much more. She’s an enigma, a mystery that will never be solved. She’s an artist and what I hope I am doing with UNFURL is showing how and why we use art. Why, even, we need art, and what it evokes in our souls.

Cai, our hero, is a dual artist – a photographer and a painter. He has the same gifts his mother mastered – and more. The purpose of Cai’s point of view in UNFURL is to explore that struggle we share, as artists, during the process of creation. A pain that is necessary to produce something that actually speaks to other people.

Instead of focusing on the label, then, I tried to focus on the confusion and mindset of a person who refuses to be misunderstood or even, understood. There isn’t even a middle ground. There is an unrealistic place where things make sense and another place, a worldly place, where nothing makes sense. Basically, there’s an artist who had her talent ripped from her… and her ability to create was tainted. Imagine if you’re born to create, and you just can’t. The reasons are hard to bear, but must be.

I wrote about life as art in another blog and I’m trying to follow through on that with UNFURL, a book that doesn’t play by the rules but when knotted to UNBIND, side by side, makes sense and yet, whether an injustice can be ever be truly resolved, we may never know…

As a writer, you know, anything can happen during the editing process. It’s a miraculous, thing, editing. Maybe like Rorschach in Watchmen, whose mood changes constantly, whose mask expresses him better than his own face, a writer can keep trying to paint the truth but only the reader can give the book its truth. So like an artist trying to paint a picture, I’m trying to use the tools (words) at my fingertips to explain what creation feels like, to explain why creatives need creation and what could happen if someone born to create had that ability tragically stolen from them.

Perhaps that’s why a novel is a novel and why sometimes, you can write all those words, only for one truth to come out of all of it.

It’s a work in progress… for sure!

(Hopefully this was an annoyingly spoiler-free preview)!
