TEASER…TEASER…TEASER

This is the PROLOGUE from my new novel A Fine Pursuit, releasing November 1st…

Noah stands on the periphery observing the chaos. He vaguely sees two people warring and yet his own mental conflict rages louder. Something is mixing with the blood and adrenalin pumping around his body – but he refuses to be provoked. He feels dizzy and out of control; sick with a sense of terrible foreboding. He is paralysed by an innate and dreadful fear.

The memory dissipates and he is somewhere else, far, far away from that scene. He has her in his arms. He takes a deep, satisfying breath of her hair and holds her close. The peace she affords him obliterates all those reminders of the ordeal. The woman he loves feels so soft and gentle against his much larger, harder body. She nuzzles her nose in his chest and waves of joy flow through his heart and stomach so that nothing hurts, no bad ever happened. The daily struggle to avoid his torment has been completely eradicated.

He blinks. Then in a mere moment, he is back in the cavernous depths of his subconscious mind. He suffers anguish beyond anything the ordinary man may experience throughout an entire lifetime. His large frame trembles with unforgiving loathing and he has no control again. His impulses are a menace. They wage a war against the educated man inside him that wants to break the pattern and be something better, something healthier and more wholesome. He just never managed it.

He hears the smash of bones and sees the twisted neck of the person at his feet. Her eyes are wide open, bloodshot, yet lifeless.

A voice echoing inside his head taunts him: You are responsible.

Noah wakes up in a cold sweat, bolting up out of bed. He knows only that he feels numb and the crushing, strangulating desolation is hard to break free of. It was a dream, just a dream. He falls back down in bed, curling into a ball, and wishes Charlotte were with him. Ever since she left, he has been alone, tormented and reminded.

He undid her; she undid him.

Though she might be surviving, he is slowly falling into the pits of despair.

A Work In Progress…

I’ve had my first bits of feedback for the WIP and it has been really good, to say it was a 2nd/3rd draft. Sometimes I am never sure just how many drafts I have done or will do.

I discovered my first draft was probably quite close to the finished product and that I had put in some unneeded bits. Sometimes it is good to try out things, other times, just stick with your gut instincts.

I suppose now in the late editing stages it is just about trying to get across my points in the most efficient, least wordy ways! If that is possible. Cutting the waffle and all that.

I have written a challenging work and in one respect, I know I am veering off course with what is normally expected of an erotic novel. But I am a northern writer after all and we are known for being gritty and attempting to tackle difficult subjects. Many great crime authors have come from the north and indeed, Get Carter was based on a book set in my hometown of Scunthorpe. Joan Plowright, widow of Laurence Olivier, famously refuses to have anything to do with the town she grew up near and strangely, her deceased husband grew up not far from Scunny too! Anyway, that is another story… ?

For those of you who have read A Fine Profession and know the issue I tackle within that book, I can reveal that part of that book is very real indeed. Someone I know was given “That Book” to read that I mention within the pages of my novel; the book that inspires Charlotte to change her life. This friend of mine read it and so much clicked into place. What I heard about the condition inspired me to create Charlotte/Lottie/The Chambermaid. I am directly inspired by real life in my erotica writing. Even though it is a primarily escapist genre, I am writing about real issues within my work. Trying to, anyway.

The female in erotica is subservient quite a lot of the time and she is the submissive to her master’s dominant. I guess I have taken those roles of the genre and messed them up a little bit. Am I demystifying them? I dunno. I have taken the dynamic and kind of brought it to the real world in one way – that definitely becomes apparent when you read A Fine Pursuit.

The dominant, mysterious, troubled male is of course perfect for erotica. Women love a complex man who can never be explained; he can only be loved. He only wants to love in return. The promise of saving or changing that man is immense. It’s what I have been reading about since I was a 13-year-old glued to romance novels. I guess there’s not a lot I can say here without giving too much of my next novel away … but I have definitely taken this archetypal male role and tried to shed light on the reasoning behind such a person’s behaviour with very realistic insights.

It’s my job now to say all I need to say (in A Fine Pursuit) without making an erotic novel very dark. It is certainly a challenging book and will force questions about what makes us human, what distinguishes love from desire and all kinds of questions. In works of art, we can never fully define a character or a situation. Can we ever define anything? We are always shifting and changing as a human race after all. I know I have so far moved people enough to make them get angry as they read. To frown and beg questions about why someone might do this or that.

There have been times when I have definitely questioned myself while writing A Fine Pursuit. I am human. I am imperfect. I ask whether I am being fair or unfair on characters. I just have to shake myself, tell myself to buckle up, and get on with it. Stop being a wuss. This is not about definition. It is about exploration.

Alongside the difficult subject I have tackled in A Fine Pursuit, I promise to provide romance of the most oblique nature. There may be moments when you are least expecting to feel anything and you will feel it. I hope you will feel it. Noah is a much different voice to Charlotte and he has given me the chance to explore so much more than I ever have done before. He has allowed me to run wild and there are so many romantic moments. Simple windows into what makes a man happy. A man who is good at heart but cannot help but be swayed by demons that constantly haunt him. He is sickeningly yucky and slushy but women will love that. Men will love that he is imperfect, so much so, but he is just a bloke trying to find some sense from his world. A world that has been without meaning for so long and not for the obvious reasons.

Most of all, I hope you see Charlotte in an entirely different light.

Eight Erotic Short Stories

The Chambermaid learnt her craft within the secretive confines of The Lodge, hidden deep within Nottingham‘s Sherwood Forest.

In the hotel she worked in, she used her skills as a domme to teach men lessons they took home to their wives.

Word of her service spread and she became renowned; synonymous with enriching the sex lives of so many.

But something happened… she fell in love. She left the Master of her heart behind… for some reason.

As she turns to professional domination as a dominatrix, she recalls her adventures both in a professional and personal capacity.

What’s clear is – this is a woman of complexity. But perhaps, her innermost thoughts – those of her true self – may answer some questions about why she does what she does.

The Novel and Its Creation

This is my experience of the process… and though I am approaching the completion of “Novel No.5”, I can tell you this ‒ each novel is different and therefore the writing of each of them is too.

So, I am going to take my two recent creations and tell you this… I have found my progression taking leaps and bounds.

A Fine Profession was always about the character of this one young woman and taking her, plopping her in certain situations, and seeing how she would react in any given scenario. I spent weeks formulating her in my mind, considering how I could take her from one journey point to another. I fasted. I tempted myself with the need to write but I held off until I had her in my sights. The ability to restrict the flow of writing something that is burning its way out is explosive. The novel therefore splashed the pages so easily when I finally let myself loose.

The Chambermaid writes as though she’s in control of the direction of her life and she seems so sure of what is going on around her. Truth is, she doesn’t have a clue. The novel is a novel within a novel, with the heroine seemingly writing her own story and a private investigator reading and reacting to it.

She writes as though her experiences are fantastical. They’re not real, according to her. She thinks she is writing the fantasy. She may well consider herself a dirty version of Jane Austen. I shall let you decide! Her thoughts and feelings are true, but skewed, by the condition she suffers.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. The sequel A Fine Pursuit is another novel within a novel, but outside the novel too. The revelations that will spring forth will be crushing. I have to really shock and awe now. Whenever I read a novel, the only way I know it’s good is if I cry at the end or at some point during. If not, fuck it, there was no point. I am brutal!! I personally need to be moved. Like in The Color Purple. Damn, the end always gets me. I don’t even try to cry. It just happens. The ring slipping out of his hand in Schindler’s List. Feck, I wept quiet tears, for humanity and everything we are capable of, both good and bad. The thing is, I do not cry easily. My husband would tell you, “She’s hard as nails, our Sal.” I really am. I absolutely am. I hate chick flicks. I like action movies and ass-kicking. I spend hours pouring over books and films, seeking that something that might move me. Those answers I seek are out there somewhere and it’s why I read. The readers are why we do it, right? Those beautiful people who want enlightening and escapism.

So, when it came to starting A Fine Pursuit it was with a different philosophy. As I wrote Noah’s story, I knew what it was that he suffered. I knew what I was heading toward throughout the journey. But, people need to experience this book entirely through his eyes, as he does, as things happen. I felt like I had to go with the flow, just let it happen, so my writing is not as strained and we see truthful reactions from him to scenarios that he nor anyone else expects. Even I wasn’t sure where Noah was going to take me because he’s such a complex man, with such a horrific past behind him.

When I had finished my first draft, I knew I really had something, but I knew it still needed to be underpinned with more. It needed the markers along the way to make the reader think… almost goading the reader to realise what is bubbling beneath. What is Noah hiding that even he cannot admit to himself? I was just not feeling anything else though. I’d written 100K words and was wrung out from that effort, though I knew there was more. That’s when you need to separate yourself from the character, from the book, and take yourself into the mind of a reader. Ask, why did he do that? why isn’t that explained? why would people treat each other like that? You have to answer all the questions people will need to be sated. You have to enrich all those ideas you have with more mystery, more feeling, more insight into the people, the person, the man or the woman, and make them real.

You have to feel the novel as a whole. You cannot view it from beginning to end then. As the author, you have to be above the creation. You need to be able to read the book from any given point and think, how can I make this convert better? The puzzle gets scrambled inside your mind and you take the rough edges and smooth them out. I go back and add bits where they need adding. Close the gap, fill the holes, plant your seeds and then grow them. But all the while, I am still writing to provoke and challenge. But still let the reader have their own experience. Then, you give it to your initial readers and let them tell you what’s what.

It starts with a singular idea, with a character or a world to explode, but a novel is really so very long when you’re writing it. Until you have written one, you never know just how hard it is to write something so vast and complex that actually still makes sense when you get to the end! You have to get people’s mannerisms, their quirks, their humours, their foibles, strengths and characteristics they’ve had since birth! It’s a crazy thing writing a novel. It’s a schizophrenic thing and so akin to method acting.

I’d warn people that my writing is graphic and evocative, crude and sometimes hardcore, but there is every reason for that. There is every reason. This is art. This is subverting all the boundaries and bonds placed on us by society. This is putting the worst of the worst before you and then bringing out the best of the best. This erotica writer will corrupt you and make you question things you never did before. At the end of the day, you’ll be made to see that the sex isn’t the point.

So, this blog has been a bit overdue, but here it is. And I am afraid, that is all I can tell you for now. The editing is ongoing and the novel is shaping up, but anything could still happen. No spoilers. But, I am excited to see how my next work is received. I have tried to give it absolutely everything. I really have discovered… the more you write, the more you develop. Keep writing.
